Tower Defense Yandex for Beginners: Rules, Goals, First Moves

First Minute on the Map

You load in and the grid is just sitting there, quiet. A winding path cuts through green terrain, and you've got maybe 200 gold and a handful of basic arrow tower icons at the bottom of the screen. The first wave button pulses. I clicked it without placing anything once – don't do that. A handful of round red creeps wobbled straight to the exit and the heart counter dropped from 20 to 15. That's the immediate lesson: the silence is fake, the first enemies are already faster than they look, and you're not here to react, you're here to build before the wave even starts.

You'll notice the Yandex wrapper around this version is lightweight but not invisible. There's a top bar with your score multiplier and a pause button that actually works when you need to breathe. No forced ads mid-wave, which I appreciated. The art style is clean, almost minimalist – no particle explosions or screen shake – which means you can actually see what's damaging what. That becomes important about ten waves in when the map gets crowded.

What You're Actually Optimizing For

Tower Defense Yandex follows the classic lane-defense formula: enemies spawn from one or more entrances, follow a fixed path, and you place towers along that path to kill them before they reach your base. Each enemy that leaks through costs you a life. Run out of lives and the run ends. Standard stuff.

The loop tightens around three things: tower placement geometry, upgrade timing, and damage-type matching. You earn gold per kill, plus a small bonus at the end of each wave. That gold is the only resource that matters, and every spend decision compounds. Spend on a new tower too early and you might not have enough to upgrade the one that's already covering a choke point. Upgrade too aggressively and you'll have a single powerful tower while three lanes go undefended.

Something I noticed by wave 17: the game doesn't give you perfect information about enemy types before they appear. You'll see a small icon preview in the wave panel, but it's vague – a shield shape, a fast-forward arrow, a skull. You have to interpret those hints and adapt. Shield means physical resistance, so your arrow towers will tickle them. Skull usually means a boss or high-HP unit that will soak damage and keep rolling unless you've got something with armor penetration or magic damage already leveled up.

The meta-goal is score. Your multiplier builds the longer you survive without leaking creeps, and the leaderboard (yes, there's a local one baked into the Yandex version) resets per session. So you're optimizing for deathless waves, not just survival. Once you start leaking, the multiplier drops and your score plateaus. That changes how you play.

Tower Types and What Actually Works

You start with basic arrow towers – cheap, fast attack speed, low damage. They're your bread and butter for the first six waves. Around wave five you unlock ice towers, which slow enemies in a small radius. The game also has cannon towers (area splash, slow reload) and magic towers (high single-target damage, ignores some armor) but you earn them progressively – they're not all available at minute one.

Here's what I learned after several restarts: arrow towers near the entrance are a trap. They fire at the first enemy in range, which means they'll plink at a fast-moving creep while a slower, tankier one walks right past. Better to place them at bends in the path where enemies bunch up, or near the exit as cleanup. Ice towers, on the other hand, work best early in the path – the slow effect stacks with itself if you upgrade it, and a slowed wave gives every other tower more time to fire.

Cannon towers feel satisfying but they miss fast enemies constantly. I lost a run on wave 12 because I placed two cannons on a straight stretch and a wave of small quick creeps just ran through the gaps between shots. Magic towers are the real carry from midgame onward, especially against the shielded units that show up around wave 15. They're expensive to place and slow to upgrade, but one level-three magic tower near the center of the map covers two lanes on most layouts and punches through armor like it's not there.

Mistakes That End Runs Early

I made most of these so you don't have to.

Selling towers impulsively. The game lets you sell towers for roughly half the gold you spent. That sounds like a safety net but it's actually a death spiral. The moment you sell something to buy a different tower type, you've lost total damage output for a wave cycle, and the gold deficit compounds. I sold an arrow tower on wave 8 to afford a magic tower and promptly leaked five creeps because the magic tower's attack speed couldn't handle volume. If you place a tower wrong, live with it and build around it.

Upgrading before expanding. A level-two tower costs as much as two level-one towers of the same type. Early on, coverage beats concentration. One upgraded arrow tower kills a single creep slightly faster; two unupgraded arrow towers kill two creeps simultaneously. The math flips later when armor values rise and you need the penetration from upgrades to do any damage at all, but before wave 10, spread out.

Ignoring the path preview. After wave 10 on many maps, the enemy path sometimes shifts – a new entrance opens, or a shortcut appears. The game gives you a subtle pulsing indicator on the minimap but it's easy to miss when you're focused on placing towers mid-wave. I lost a run because I had all my defenses on the left lane and a new spawn point opened on the right with zero coverage. Now I pause between waves 9 and 10 and scan the whole map.

Overvaluing range. The upgrade tree for most towers includes a range increase, and it's tempting. But range without damage means you're just tickling enemies from further away, and on maps with multiple path overlaps, long-range towers waste shots on enemies that aren't threatening the exit yet. Prioritize damage upgrades first, attack speed second, range last.

Wave Rhythm and When to Pause

There's a rhythm to the waves that took me about 20 minutes to internalize. Waves 1-5 are tutorial-lite: slow creeps, predictable path, enough gold to experiment. Waves 6-10 introduce mixed enemy types and you'll start seeing the fast ones. Waves 11-15 are the difficulty cliff – shielded creeps, mini-bosses with health bars that stretch across the screen, and multiple spawn points on some maps. After wave 20, it's an endurance test where one mistake cascades.

I started using the pause button aggressively around wave 8. Between waves, pause and look at your tower placement. Are there gaps in coverage? Is any tower's attack animation triggering but not killing? That means the damage has fallen off and it's time to upgrade or replace. During a wave, pause if you see a clump of enemies about to break through – you can still place towers or upgrade while paused, which feels almost like cheating but the game allows it and the later waves demand it.

Gold management between waves is the real game. I keep a mental rule: never end a wave with more than 50 unspent gold unless I'm specifically saving for a magic tower. Idle gold is wasted damage potential. Even a cheap arrow tower at the backline can catch leaks that would otherwise cost you a life and your multiplier.

Device Notes: Phone vs Desktop

I tested this on both desktop browser and a mid-range Android phone. The game scales fine on mobile – the UI elements are large enough to tap without fat-fingering, and the tower placement grid snaps cleanly even on a smaller screen. The main difference is scroll speed: on desktop you can pan the map with mouse edge-scrolling, which is fast and precise. On mobile, you drag to pan and it's slightly slower, which matters when you're trying to place a tower at the far end of the map mid-wave.

Phone performance held steady through wave 25 with no frame drops, though I noticed the battery drain was real – about 12% in 20 minutes. Desktop obviously runs cooler and the wider screen lets you see more of the map at once, which reduces the panning issue entirely. If you're chasing a high score, desktop gives you a slight edge just in screen real estate and mouse precision. But the mobile version is perfectly playable for casual runs.

One mobile-specific quirk: the Yandex version sometimes shows a small banner ad at the bottom between waves. It's not intrusive, doesn't cover the grid, and you can close it after a few seconds. No video ads interrupted my playthrough.

A Short Practice Plan for the First Hour

If you're coming in cold, here's the approach that got me from dying on wave 8 to consistently reaching wave 18-20 in about an hour of play.

First 10 minutes: Pick the easiest-looking map (usually the one with a single long winding path). Play three runs without trying to win. First run, just place arrow towers near the exit and watch how enemies move. Second run, experiment with ice towers at the entrance and arrow towers at bends. Third run, save gold aggressively and try to place a magic tower by wave 7. Die in all three. That's fine – you're building pattern recognition, not score.

Next 15 minutes: Start a serious run. Place two arrow towers at the first major bend, not at the entrance. By wave 4, add an ice tower just before that bend so enemies slow down right as they enter the arrow towers' range. Save gold through waves 5 and 6. Buy a magic tower by wave 8 and place it centrally. Upgrade the ice tower once, then pour gold into the magic tower's damage. This loadout – arrow cleanup, ice slow, magic punch – handles most mixed waves through wave 15.

Final 20 minutes: Push past wave 15. When the shielded creeps show up, your magic tower should be level two or three. Add a cannon tower near the exit for splash damage against the small fast creeps that slip through. Watch the minimap for new spawn points. Pause often. If you leak even one creep, don't panic – but adjust placement immediately for the next wave. You'll likely wipe around wave 18-20 the first time. Note what killed you. Was it speed, armor, or volume? Adjust your tower ratio next run.

The game rewards iteration more than raw reflexes. You can play it free in your browser, no download needed, and the loop is tight enough that "one more run" becomes real after you see your score climbing. I found myself chasing the multiplier more than the wave number – there's something satisfying about watching that number hold steady at 4x or 5x deep into a run.
